“You’re quiet this morning.”

Laurel looked up from the article she’d read three times. She still didn’t know what it said. The memory of Yates’s sweet kiss wouldn’t go away.

Why had he kissed her? And why had he resisted a discussion of his faith? He’d been angry and confused after Trent’s death, but had he given up on God altogether?

Faith was her bedrock. She couldn’t navigate this life without Jesus.

No wonder Yates was troubled.

“I’m thinking,” she muttered in response to Tansy, who lingered at the door to her office, coffee cup in hand.

“About Yates?” Tansy asked. “I heard you were with him last night at the game.”

Laurel had known this was coming. She’d felt the tension from Tansy from the moment the assistant editor had entered the Times building without her usual offering of sweets from the Bea Sweet Bakery.

“No, Tansy,” she said, “I’m not thinking about Yates. I’m trying to come up with a reason not to fire you.”

“You’re blushing.” Tansy stepped inside the office and pulled the door shut. “Everybody’s talking about the two of you. Speculation runs rife.”

“Everybody? A rather broad generalization, isn’t it? The mayor was in here ten minutes ago to discuss the agenda for the next council meeting. Therefore, not everyone is talking about me. Your comment is hyperbole at best, silly at worst.”

Tansy pointed the coffee cup, a mug emblazoned with the words I’ll probably spill this. “Oh, you are good. Sidestep, redirect, avoid the topic. You should be in politics.”

“Right now, I’m in the newspaper business, and if you want a paycheck, go back to your desk and work.”

“Cranky. Again. That man has a strange effect on you.”

“It’s not him. It’s this paper.”

“So he’s not making you cranky. He’s making you blush. Does your grandma know yet that you’ve been out on the town with the enemy?”

“He is not my enemy.”

“He should be.”

“No, he shouldn’t. I don’t want enemies.” She wanted Yates to kiss her again. The errant, but truthful, thought deepened the blush on her cheeks. “Jesus intended us to get along, to forgive, to give people a second chance. And yes, Gran had heard by the time I got home last night.”

“Did she need an extra heart pill?”

“Probably. I didn’t ask. I explained that Yates and I are going to be seeing each other because of the Stafford children. She’ll have to deal with it.”

“I doubt she was happy.”

“No, but I was. Telling her was a relief.”

“She’s afraid for you, Laurel. So am I.”

“Couldn’t my best friend trust me a little in this?” Her head was starting to throb. “Please.”

“I just want you to know I have your back.”

“Then let me talk to you about Yates without constantly reminding me that he jilted me. You and Gran hurt me as much as he did with your reminders that I’m not enough for any guy to fall in love with.”

Tansy sucked in a roomful of newsprint-scented air. “Laurel, I never meant that at all.”

Laurel leaned her elbows on the desk. “That’s the way you made me feel.
